Sur-Kshetra: Aslam and Reshammiya set for a battle

Sur-Kshetra: Aslam and Reshammiya set for a battle

Pop sensation Atif Aslam will soon start shooting for a three-month long musical reality TV show “Sur-Kshetra”, in which he will be leading Pakistani singers while Indian singer Himesh Reshammiya will be leading the Indian side, reportskoolmuzone.com. They are also going to judge the show. The show will be shot in Dubai and will most likely go on air early next year.
“Sur-Kshetra” will be broadcast on Sahara One and will provide a platform for upcoming singers from India and Pakistan to showcase their talents, reports rediff.com.
When asked, how “Sur-Kshetra” will be different from other reality shows, Aslam replied; “This show is different because artists from both Pakistan and India are going to share the same platform. There will be a lot of cultural exchange and the Indian audience will come to know about Pakistani culture.”
Additionally, the artist also said that he will try to introduce contemporary music in the show. “A lot of singers have tried it in Bollywood and other shows, but I would like to present it in its true form and in a different manner.”
Apart from this show, Aslam will also be jamming with ex-members of American rock band, Guns N’ Roses, for the “Coke Studio” sessions. However, it’s still not certain whether he will perform for the Pakistani version of the show or the Indian. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, the singer-cum-actor said that he “will also be performing with a couple of popular Rajasthani folk artists,” which indicates that he will be performing on “Coke Studio @ MTV”, reports koolmuzone.com.
The singer, who also acted in Shoaib Mansoor’s latest film Bol, said that he loves the concept of “Coke Studio” and it was hard for him to say “no” to it. “I’m looking forward to the session, it’s been a dream of sorts. On ‘Coke Studio’, we get a chance to play different genres of music with different artists. I love the concept of the show — I just couldn’t say no.”

Why is Katrina 'Chikni Chameli'?

Why is Katrina 'Chikni Chameli'?

MUMBAI: After Sheila, Munni, Shalu and Jalebi Bai, ‘Chikni Chameli’ is the latest item bomb in Bollywood. Katrina Kaif has outdone her ‘Sheila ki jawani’ act in the song, and “Agneepath” director Karan Malhotra believes she has done full justice to it.
“I think the way the song was made, it was so wonderful, that only a topmost actress could have done justice to the song. And as far as Katrina is concerned, her USP is that she has never been seen in any film in that kind of zone that ‘Chikni Chameli’ is in. So which is why she also stands out in that atmosphere and that is why the song is catching a lot of eyeballs,” the director said at the music premiere of “Agneepath” at a radio station here.
The men behind the song are composer-brothers Ajay-Atul, primarily known for their work in Marathi films and serials. “Chikni chameli” is a song inspired by their own Marathi song “Kombadi palali”.
No wonder Malhotra denies that the song draws inspiration from any other item number.
“No, no girl inspired us for ‘Chikni chameli’,” said Malhotra.
Meanwhile, Katrina’s fast, rhythmic ‘Chikni chameli’ act has set many eyeballs popping. “Agneepath”, a remake of the 1990 film of the same name, is set for release Jan 26 next year.
It stars Hrithik Roshan in the lead with Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka Chopra and Rishi Kapoor in key roles.

Aishwarya came between Salman & me: Somy Ali

Aishwarya came between Salman & me: Somy Ali

MUMBAI: Salman Khan was Somy Ali's first boyfriend, one she came chasing to India to meet as a 15-year-old with a huge crush on the star.

Today, after a short Bollywood career, Somy, originally from Pakistan, has evolved into a US-based human rights activist.

A decade later, the former couple remains in touch. Says Somy, "Salman was my first boyfriend. I had a huge crush on him as a teenager. The crush led me to leave Florida and move to India and join films just so I could find him and get married to him. You have a license of doing idiotic things when you're 15. However, I do not have a single regret of pursuing my first love. They say if you can count four friends on your fingers and trust them blindly, you're extremely fortunate. Salman happens to be one of them. He has a heart of gold and I know for a fact that if I were ever in need he would be the first person that I would call."

In an interview to a lifestyle website, she said, "No regrets at all. I learned a great deal from Salman and his family. Teenage years are formative years for individuals, especially a young girl and spending my teenage years growing up in front of Salman has made me who I am today. Salman and his family taught me that it does not matter what religion one is, what culture one comes from, what makes a person a good person is their actions. He was a good role model to have growing up, outside of the boyfriend aspect of things."

And, who came between her and Salman Khan?? She states categorically, "Aishwarya Rai." But she doesn't blame either. She says, "Neither. They both did what they felt and believed was the right thing to do at that point in time. I don't like to hold grudges. It will only affect my growth as a person."

The last time she met Salman, currently single, was in Bangkok. "I was there for a women's rights conference and he was there for a film shoot in May 2011. We caught up as friends would and talked about our non-profits. We both complimented each other about making a change for the better."

Somy also plans to adopt a baby girl!

Shahid & Bipashas dinner date

Shahid & Bipashas dinner date

Shahid and Bipasha met over dinner and were heard talking about working together soon.

It seems the Shahid Kapoor-Bipasha Basu romance will blossom on the big screen soon. On Saturday night, the couple was spotted having dinner at a Bandra cafe in Mumbai with director Siddharth Anand and his wife Mamta. Siddharth is known to be close to Ranbir Kapoor (he's done two films with the actor) and has worked with Bipasha in Bachna Aye Haseeno. However, it was Shahid and Sid (who've never worked together) who were bonding at the dinner. Besides casual conversation, the chatter also touched upon the subject of Shahid and Bipasha possibly doing a film together.

They worked together in Shikar (2005), but weren't cast opposite each other. Since then, the newly-minted couple hasn't shared screen space together. A source reveals, "Bipasha is really fond of Siddharth. She wanted him to come for a casual dinner with Shahid. They were joking around and having a good time. Shahid was quite interested in discussing the possibility of doing a romantic film with Bips. A few months ago, there was buzz that Sid wanted to remake the Tom Cruise film Knight and Day with Shahid and Priyanka for a leading production house. However, the project never took off."
Bipasha too showed keen interest in discussing the possibility of a future project. The source adds, "The conversation wasn't seriously about work. The motive behind the dinner meeting was to catch up, but they couldn't help discussing working in the future."

Now Deepika falls for Ranveer

MUMBAI: After sweeping some pretty faces off their feet with his charming personality, Ranveer Sing's latest victim is Bollywood's gorgeous lady- Deepika Padukone.

Deepika is totally smitten by Ranveer and does not shy away from accepting this fact on public platforms too. Ranveer on his part is enjoying all the attention and Deepika's attention has surely makes him look hotter among his contemporaries.

Though Ranveer is only one film old but his charm has caught up big time. Talking about Ranveer Singh's talent and charisma, Deepika says, "From the new lot I really like Ranveer. I watched Band Baaja Baarat and there is something about him that I really liked. He has tremendous screen presence and a certain amount of energy and confidence that I really like."

In the past Anushka Sharma and Sonakshi Sinha have echoed a similar sentiment for the actor and now Deepika has added a new dimension to Ranveer's fan following.

Tendulkar wait continues but India take command

MELBOURNE: Sachin Tendulkar's latest setback within sight of his elusive 100th international century may have dismayed fans at the first Melbourne Test on Tuesday, but not his Indian teammates.

Test cricket's greatest run-getter was sensationally bowled for 73 by paceman Peter Siddle with just three balls left on the second day of the opening Test against Australia.

The wicket sent groans around the vast Melbourne Cricket Ground from the sizeable Indian contingent in the 53,000 crowd, denied the chance of seeing the "Little Master" reach the landmark on Wednesday.

India reached the close in a commanding position at 214 for three, trailing Australia's first innings 333 by 119 runs with Rahul Dravid, second only to Tendulkar for most Test runs, unbeaten on 68 after getting a reprieve on 65 when he was bowled by a Siddle no-ball.

Tendulkar, who has been on 99 Test and ODI centuries since scoring 111 against South Africa in the World Cup in March, looked in great touch but lost his stumps in an inspired final over from the stout-hearted Siddle.

He faced just 98 balls and hit eight fours and a six in a 117-run stand with Dravid for the third wicket.

The "Little Master" played some signature cover drives and an audacious upper cut over the slips for six off Siddle's first ball after tea.

Australia thought they had finally got rid of Dravid on 65 when he was bowled by Siddle late in the day, only for him to get a reprieve for a no-ball.

There were precious few high points for Australia on a back-breaking day in the field other than the wickets of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir.

Paceman James Pattinson bowled the adventurous Sehwag in the penultimate over before tea to bring Tendulkar to the crease, greeted by a standing ovation from the 53,000 MCG crowd.

Sehwag was dropped three times on his way to a brisk 67 off 83 balls with seven fours in his 75-run stand with Dravid.

He had his first "life" on 11 when he was dropped by Mike Hussey low in the gully off Pattinson.

Sehwag continued to live dangerously and hit successive fours off spinner Nathan Lyon to reach 51, but attempted a lofted shot next ball that was put down in a difficult diving chance by David Warner at long on.

Seven runs later Haddin hashed a one-gloved diving effort off Pattinson.

Sehwag, who smashed a one-day record score of 219 off 149 balls against the West Indies in Indore earlier this month, has now scored 8,047 runs in 93 Tests.

Gambhir was surprised by Ben Hilfenhaus's extra pace and bounce and edged to Haddin for three in the eighth over.

Earlier, the Australia tail added 56 runs for the last four wickets in 97 minutes of batting time.

Haddin only lasted 10 minutes before he snicked Zaheer Khan to Sehwag in the gully for 27, ending a partnership of 72 runs with Peter Siddle.

Siddle's 99-ball resistance ended with a great delivery from Zaheer.

The Indian left-armer got one to leave Siddle off the pitch and prise a catch behind for M.S. Dhoni for 41.

Hilfenhaus hit three fours in his unrestrained 19 before holing out to Virat Kohli in the deep off spinner Ravi Ashwin.

Lyon was last man out bowled attempting to sweep Ashwin for six, leaving Pattinson 18 not out off 54 balls.

Zaheer finished the best of India's bowlers with four for 77 off 31 overs, while Umesh Yadav and Ashwin claimed three wickets each. (AFP)

Shagufta Ejaz: ‘We must shun western values’

The veteran actor of “Aanch” fame gives some useful tips to the young crop of actors.

Karachi:Her rise to fame was a matter of chance — an appearance in a modelling show for a friend’s event and the next thing Shagufta Ejaz knew was that she had practically launched her career on PTV. Spotted by acclaimed director Mohammad Baksh Samejo at the event, Ejaz had little idea about the limelight awaiting her. It was Samejo who introduced the budding actor to PTV which resulted in Ejaz getting an offer by Kazim Pasha for the lead role for his play “Jangloos”.
However, the actor’s major break came when she enacted the role of Ulfat in PTV’s super hit play “Aanch” (1992), directed by Tariq Jameel. In the drama, which revolved around a couple whose relationship was on the rocks, Ejaz played the lead role opposite (the now late) Shafi Mohammad. About the drama, Ejaz states, “The play had a profound impact on many families in Pakistan.” Additionally, the play also helped dispel widespread stereotypes of stepmothers, who generally have the tag of being ‘evil’ in our society. It was through this role that Ejaz received country-wide prominence; to the extent that even a small shoe-making industry named its local brand ‘Ulfat’ shoes, which sold the same styled pumps that Ejaz used to wear in the play.
Regarding PTV, she said, “PTV was my second home. In those days, recording a 13-episode play took 13 weeks, as one episode would take almost seven days to record. I still consider PTV directors an institution in themselves.”
Currently, in talks with Express Entertainment channel for a light, comedy show, Ejaz shares her opinion on the productions of nowadays, “Today’s world is infused with fast-paced technology, which is sadly more glamorised and commercialised.”
Further highlighting the change in the television industry, she said, “Dramas these days are based on pages right out of Urdu Digest. Sadly, in our day and age, these stories earned not a penny for the writer, but now times have changed.”
Ejaz also rues the fact that people in Pakistan are deeply influenced by the West. “There’s no censorship now; we are definitely mimicking the West, taking cues from their actors and their set-up. We have forgotten that we have certain limitations and we should keep these in mind and shun Western influences.”
When asked why she didn’t consider venturing into Lollywood, she replies straightforwardly that she never had a temperament for films. More recently she was offered a theatre role in Napa’s play “Nek Perveen”, which she declined because of her unavailability.
On a concluding note, Ejaz shares a useful tip for the young people who want to pursue acting. “While enacting a role, immerse yourself completely in the role. We’ve got talent but they need to be completely dedicated about giving their very best. Your acting skills should be so good that even Westerners get amused.”

Veena Malik says FHM photoshoot was a 'mistake': Indian media

Veena Malik says FHM photoshoot was a 'mistake': Indian media

Model Veena Malik expressed regret over her involvement in a controversial photoshoot for Indian magazine FHM, Indian media reported on Wednesday.
A report by Zee News stated that Malik admitted she had made a mistake by doing the ‘topless’ photoshoot but categorically denied a ‘nude’ photoshoot. She said that she had covered herself during the shoot but her pictures were altered by the magazine. The actor said that she feels “cheated”.
“Yes, of course, both the images were morphed. My upper portion was covered with tattoos. I think if I could rewind this time, I would like to delete. I feel cheated,” said Malik while talking to the media.
The actor said that she believes everyone makes mistakes and so did she, but has learnt her lesson and wants to “move on”.
Malik was not only hit by vast criticism in Pakistan but was also disowned by her father after nude images of her appeared on the cover of FHM. A Muslim body in India also condemned the act and issued a fatwa against her for participating in an Indian TV show to look for a husband.

Social worker Jahangir Akhtar says economic policies of Nawaz Sharif compelled him to join the party

ISLAMABAD / LAHORE: Reposing confidence in the leadership of Nawaz Sharif, local political worker and human rights activist Jahangir Akhtar announced joining Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) on Wednesday.
Akhtar, while speaking to The Express Tribune said that he decided to join the PML-N because he has faith in Nawaz’s leadership and believes that he can take the country out of the crisis as he is the only mature politician in the country.
The human rights activist listed the reasons why he joined the PML-N which included Nawaz’s positive stance towards Pak-India friendship, his efforts for education for poor people like Danish schools and his support for the Lawyers’ Movement.
Commenting on the politics of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Akhtar said that the PPP is a party of feudal lords and not of politicians.
“One doesn’t become a politician by just being someone’s daughter, son or husband,” Akhtar said. “In my opinion, the only party that can help Pakistan is the PML-N,” he added.
When asked about his anti-corruption movement, Akhtar said that the PML-N has promised him that if the parliamentarians fail to pass the accountability bill, it will unilaterally submit it to the house.
Akhtar also announced that if the bill was not proposed within four days, he will start his hunger strike again.
The current rift between the PPP and the PML-N over the bill, according to Akhtar, is about who should head the commission.
“The PPP wants to appoint retired judge, while on the other hand the PML-N wants to appoint a serving judge,” Akhtar explained.
Earlier while addressing a press conference along with PML-N central leader Senator Zafar Ali Shah at the National Press Club (NPC), Akhtar said that the PML-N leadership played a key role in strengthening democracy and democratic institutions in the country.
Welcoming the participation of Akhtar, Senator Shah said that every political party would like to have workers like Akhtar. He pointed out that Akhtar had been working for the last 40 years for the promotion of democracy and human rights in the federal capital.
The 68 years old former army gunner has spent the better part of his life campaigning for progressive causes and reduction in the defence budget. For his trouble, he was sent to jail for a year along with 10 lashes during the military dictatorship of General Ziaul Haq.
PML-N’s Inamullah Niazi quits party
Khan Niazi announced his resignation from PML-N on Wednesday.
Addressing a press conference at Lahore Press Club with his brother Najeebullah Khan Niazi, he said, “I am raising voice against the humiliations and exploitations meted out to the senior leaders of PML-N including Javed Hashmi, Ahsan Iqbal, Tehmina Daultana and others who faced hardships during the dictatorship of Pervez Musharraf.”
He further said that Hashmi’s resignation from the party was the first drop of rain but people would see a tremor in PML-N within a few days.
Inamullah added that Imran Khan was his cousin but he was not going to join Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and he would remain a PML-N worker.
“A few PML-N workers including me, Iqbal and Hashmi faced jails and a lot of problems during the Musharraf regime and presented a decorated PML-N to our leaders but a certain group is trying to ruin the party which has already made another party within the PML-N,” he revealed.
To a question regarding the future of the PTI, he said, “I had informed Mian Nawaz Sharif about the real threat of PTI in London in 2006 but to no avail… Sharif brothers would have to see more threats in the coming weeks if they do not open their eyes."
